Simple Technology That Can Make Everyday Life Easier

Technology doesn’t have to be complicated to be helpful. In fact, some of the best technology is the simplest, the kind that solves a small everyday problem and makes life just a little easier.

At Grateful Guides, I believe technology should help you feel more independent and confident, not frustrated or overwhelmed.

Sometimes, a few simple tools can make a big difference.

A phone stand can make video calls easier because you don’t have to hold your phone the entire time. A stylus can make tapping small buttons on a phone or tablet more comfortable. Large-print keyboards and keyboard covers can make computer keys easier to see.

Even something as simple as an extra-long charging cord can be helpful when the outlet isn't conveniently located near your favorite chair or bedside table.

There are also helpful items that aren't necessarily "techy." Cable labels can help you remember which cord belongs to which device. Motion-sensor lights can make it easier to see when walking through the house at night. Item trackers can help locate frequently misplaced belongings.

Digital photo frames are another favorite because technology can also be about connection. Family members can share photos, allowing grandparents, parents, and loved ones to enjoy new memories without having to search through a phone.

The Most Important Part: Keep It Simple

Buying a new device is only the beginning.

Before giving new technology to someone, take a few minutes to make it easier to use. Increase the text size if necessary. Adjust the volume and screen brightness. Set up the important features ahead of time.

And don't try to teach everything at once.

Start with one or two things.

Once those feel comfortable, move on to something new.

A small written reminder with simple instructions can also be incredibly helpful. There's nothing wrong with keeping directions nearby and referring back to them whenever you need them.

Choose Technology for the Person

The newest or fanciest gadget isn't always the best choice.

Ask yourself:

Will this solve a problem?
Will it be easy to use?
Will it make everyday life more convenient?

If the answer is yes, that's the kind of technology worth considering.

At Grateful Guides, my goal is to help seniors feel comfortable using everyday technology, one simple step at a time.

Technology doesn't have to be intimidating. Sometimes you just need someone to show you the way. 💙
